A consummate figurative realist
Steven Smith is one of the UK’s most exciting young figurative artists. His extraordinary work is built on the tenets of classical style but each piece is an exceptional example of contemporary photo-realism.
Steven was born in Preston, Lancashire, in 1974. He studied Fine Art at Middlesbrough University then set up a studio and soon became a successful Scenic Painter and Mural Artist working on commissions throughout the UK and Europe. In 2011 he had the opportunity to work with professional models in a studio setting and began to develop the stunning figurative style that has brought his work to prominence.
Whilst his reputation grew as a great scenic painter Steven continued to feed his passion for portrait and landscape painting and his extensive travels allowed him to visit many famous galleries and see major works of art at first hand.
He studied the techniques used by both contemporaries and old masters, from European painters like Botticelli, Caravaggio and Delacroix to those of more recent American Artists such as Chuck Close, Ralph Goings and Richard Estes. Combining these influences he developed a classical, yet very photo-realistic, style of oil painting.
Steven has created a series of large scale paintings for museums such as The National Army Museum and The Natural History Museum, his work has appeared on film and television sets, in Hotels such as DeVere, Marriott and recently at the exclusive Funky Buddha in Mayfair. He has exhibited in many successful shows and his growing reputation has led to portrait commissions for boxer Amir Khan and the footballer Kevin Davies. His work is highly sought after across the UK.
